Oman – Zanzibar

follow link DAY 1: MUSCAT CITY TOUR (09.00 – 15.00 HRS)

Breakfast in the restaurant

Our first visit of the day is Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which features five minarets representing the five pillars of Islam, with the main minaret which is more than 90 meters high. Built at Sultan Qaboos’ personal expense, the Grand Mosque houses a library and centre for the teaching of religious studies. Mosque was built over a period of 6 years from 1995–2001.

We will continue our tour with a stroll around the Al-Alam Palace (official palace of his majesty) and the 16th Century forts, Jalali and Mirani. (Photo stops)

After lunch will continue our journey to Seeb & visit Oman’s only perfume factory, Amouage.

Today we go to Nizwa where we will admire the surounding highlights, which includes a visit to the famous Round Tower Fort & the souq of Nizwa.

Only a few kilometers away, you will find the Jabrin fort, one of the finest and most picturesque forts of Oman. Built in the 17th century to be the Imam’s residence, it therefore has rich and beautiful ornaments, such as the delicately painted wooden ceilings. The Jabrin fort is certainly the most elegant example of the traditional Omani architecture.

We continue our day with a visit at Al Hamra, one of the last loam villages in Oman, you will enjoy looking at view point of remaining of very old settlements, passing by Bait Saffa and interacting with the local ladies.

The Village is characterised by its alleys, traditional buildings, high mud buildings, and agricultural terraces that wrap around the mountain, along with the old buildings. Misfat Al Abriyeen rises a thousand metres above sea level. The homes of its inhabitants are at the top of the mountain and their farms are on the slope. Its decorated houses standing side by side in close proximity look like terraces waving up and down with the mountain’s terrain and give the visitor a distinctive visual pleasure. It is said that the first house in Misfat Al Abriyeen village was built two hundred years ago.

DAY 4: JBS – WAHIBA:

After Breakfast we will be leaving

Before staying a night in the magnisifant Desert scenery, you will make a stop in the village of Rowhda for a meeting with the head of the tribe (Sheik) and a lunch with his family. A stroll around the village is a must !

DAY 5: WAHIBA – SUR:

Continue our journey to the fishing town of Sur & visit surrounding, including a visit to traditional dhow yard, biggest dhow building center of Arabia, boats being made the traditional way. Sur is famously known as a great seaport of ancient times.

After dinner you will witness one of the nature’s wonders: watch turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs & or perhaps see baby turtles hatching.(no pictures allowed)

DAY 6: SUR – MCT:

If you are an early bird, you may join the 4 am Turtle visit again and take pictures of these magnificent creatures.

Next we continue the journey through village of Qalhat; stop at the tomb of Bibi Miriam.Drive through Tiwi & stop at Wadi Shab, an amazing oasis full of palms, mango & banana trees in the middle of a rocky gorge. It is certainly one of the most gorgeous destinations in Oman. Beyond the breathtaking entrance, the wadi rewards you with views of aquamarine pools, waterfalls and terraced plantations; kingfishers add glorious splashes of colour.

We reach the water pools after delightful 40 minute walk through the wadi where we can paddle & swim to the hidden caverns & waterfalls.

There starts again a tarmac road, going along the white sand beaches. These beaches are also nice spots for swimming, or just for simple relaxation.

Continue the drive to Muscat via Quriyat, with a photo stop at the Sink Hole (part of the mountain that has collapsed & filled with sea water). This huge cavity now contains peaceful turquoise water, inviting for a swim.

We reach in Muscat in the evening, check in to the hotel & freshen up, rest of the day at leisure.

DAY 7: departure transfer MCT

This tour takes you through fabled Stone Town where history appears to stand still. With visits to the House of Wonders, the Palace Museum (People’s Palace), Dr Livingstone’s House and the Arab Fort amongst others, it is a fascinating look at the essence of Zanzibar. You will see Zanzibar’s bustling fish and vegetable market, winding alleyways, ornately carved and studded doors, two cathedrals and countless mosques! A visit to the site of the former slave market site at Mkunazini should also be included and rounds off an insight into Zanzibar’s huge history and vibrant culture. Stone Town has some excellent gifts shops with plenty of souvenirs and handicrafts to choose from. The tour ends for a shopping spree.

Day 10: Pemba Island

  • check out and flight to Pemba Island, reach around lunch time
  • Afternoon at Leisure
  • overnight at Pemba Lodge , full board

Day 11:

  • visit Pemba Island with a guide
  • Return to Zanzibar by flight 16:15 hrs

Day 12: Zanzibar

The history of Zanzibar would be incomplete without seeing the cloves and many other spices which brought the Sultans of Oman and the beginnings of the infamous slave trade.

The tour starts with the visit to the Livingstone house, followed by a stop at the ruins of the former Palace of Sultan Barghash then the Persian baths and afterwards into the villages Spices can be seen in the plantations just outside and a good tour includes opportunities to dazzle the senses with fresh spices and tropical seasonal fruits like mangoes, bananas, pineapple, jack fruit, coconut, breadfruit, dorian, ramboutants, mangoustine, avocados, star fruits, cocoa,.

A detailed description is given about a variety of spices, cinnamon, cardamom, lemongrass, ginger roots, cloves, turmeric, nutmeg, pepper and different kinds of oils and their uses in cooking and cosmetics. Visitors will be fascinated by the sheer number of spices produced and their incredible value for many ailments. This is also the cheapest place to purchase spices and spice oils.

Day 13: Zanzibar

  • Optional excursion: Prison Island or Jozani Forest Reserve

Prison Island

Once the site of a gaol for misbehaving slaves, the island lies just off the old stone town. It is fringed with a beautiful coral reef, ideal for snorkelling, and has a lovely white beach (pictured opposite) for sun-bathing.

It is also home to a family of giant tortoises, imported from the Seychelles in the late 19th century. This island is ideal for a day-trip with refreshments available throughout the day. It also has a small restaurant where you can enjoy freshly caught fish.

or Jozani Forest

The Jozani Natural Forest Reserve is located in the central east region of Zanzibar island and is home to the rare Red Colobus Monkey, which is endemic to Zanzibar. Guided walk to see these monkeys full of character, and roam freely. They can also be seen at very close quarters just outside the reserve’s perimeter and are incredibly photogenic. Jozani is home to other species including Syke’s monkey’s, small buck and bush pigs. The elusive Zanzibar leopard (last sited several years ago) is said to feed here at night – perhaps this is why the reserve is only open during the day. Nature walks also help to learn about variety of herbal plants. Jozani has an excellent nature trail and the guides are well trained and informative. The tour ends by a visit to the mangrove swamp board walk then return to Zanzibar Town to your hotel or the airport.

Day 14: Zanzibar

  • Optional excursion: Kizimkazi Mosque & Dolphin Tour

Situated on the southern point of the island, Kizimkazi fishing village is home to several schools of bottle-nosed dolphins which can often be sighted following a short boat trip from the village. If you are lucky, you may be able to swim quite close to the dolphins which can be a very rewarding experience. Kizimkazi is also the site of a 12th century mosque, the earliest evidence of Islam in East Africa, and is thus worth a visit for both natural and cultural reasons.

Day 15: Zanzibar
